Michigan road salt does not stay on the road. Tires and traffic turn salty meltwater into spray that reaches frames, wheel wells, suspension areas, steps, tanks, fasteners, trailer hardware, and the lower body. Once the visible white film dries, chloride residue can remain in seams and sheltered pockets. The answer is not simply “wash every Friday.” A useful fleet plan connects washing to exposure, directs the work toward the places residue collects, and controls every gallon of wash water.

Why chloride residue deserves a plan

Chloride salts accelerate corrosion. In the presence of moisture, dissolved salts make the water on a metal surface more conductive. Chloride ions can also interfere with protective films on steel, allowing corrosion activity to develop or continue at vulnerable areas. Repeated wetting, drying, and fresh salt exposure can keep that process active even when a truck looks acceptable from standing height.

Washing is one part of corrosion control, not a repair for damaged coating, active rust, or failed components. The practical goal is to remove deposits before they remain packed into crevices, then use inspection findings to identify coating damage, trapped debris, or parts that need qualified service.

Set frequency from exposure, not the calendar

No official interval works for every Michigan fleet. A local delivery truck that runs through slush all day faces a different load than a unit parked during a storm. Highway mileage, unpaved yards, bridge spray, temperature swings, and indoor storage all affect how much residue accumulates and how long surfaces stay damp.

Build a trigger-based schedule around four inputs:

  1. Storm and route exposure. Record whether a unit operated on treated roads, in active snowfall, or through sustained slush and spray.
  2. Storage conditions. A heated building can thaw packed snow and keep salty moisture moving into seams. Outdoor storage creates a different freeze-thaw pattern.
  3. Inspection findings. Watch for visible film, packed material, coating chips, residue around fasteners, and debris held in wheel wells or frame pockets.
  4. OEM guidance. Follow the vehicle, body, trailer, brake, and equipment manufacturers’ cleaning instructions, pressure limits, exclusions, and maintenance requirements.

Use those inputs to assign wash priority after each exposure event. Dispatch, maintenance, and the wash team should share the same rule set. That makes the schedule defensible without pretending one weekly or monthly interval fits every route and asset.

Target the salt path

A rinse of cab sides and logos improves appearance but can miss the highest-exposure zones. Start with the route road spray takes: lower body panels, steps, mud flaps, wheel wells, accessible frame and undercarriage surfaces, suspension-adjacent areas, crossmembers, and trailer landing gear. Flush pockets where slush and grit can collect, working methodically so cleaned areas are not covered again by runoff from above.

Brake-adjacent exterior surfaces also need attention, but “more pressure” is not safer. Use controlled flow, suitable distance, and an angle that carries residue away. Do not direct high-pressure water into brake assemblies, hubs, bearings, electrical connectors, sensors, vents, seals, air intakes, or other sensitive components. Never treat an undercarriage as an undifferentiated surface. Follow OEM instructions and keep technicians clear of hot parts, moving equipment, and unsupported vehicles.

After washing, allow drainage and drying appropriate to the equipment. If an inspection reveals damaged wiring protection, loose parts, coating loss, active rust, or a brake concern, route it to maintenance rather than trying to solve it with the wash wand.

Use a safe wash location

Salt, sediment, detergent, oil, grease, and metals can leave the vehicle with wash water. That mixture does not belong in a storm drain, ditch, soil, or nearby surface water. EPA and Michigan EGLE washing guidance centers on preventing those discharges.

Use a designated wash area with a clear collection path. Depending on the site, that may mean a contained wash bay or a temporary bermed pad with capture equipment. Protect nearby inlets before work begins, inspect hoses and containment, and stop if water escapes the controlled area. Keep dry cleanup tools available for sediment and debris; removing solids before washing reduces the material entering the water stream.

Collected water needs an authorized destination. Options may include recycling, approved treatment or disposal, or discharge to a sanitary sewer with permission from the receiving authority. A sanitary drain is not automatic approval. Site configuration, local rules, wastewater characteristics, and sewer authority conditions determine what is allowed. Confirm the plan before the first wash, not while runoff is moving across the yard.

Make spring cleaning a reset

When regular salting ends, schedule a spring reset rather than assuming rain has finished the job. Give each unit a deliberate undercarriage and wheel-well cleaning, remove packed grit from accessible collection points, and inspect after surfaces are clean and dry enough to evaluate.

The reset should produce a maintenance list. Note coating failures, corrosion staining, damaged splash guards, blocked drain paths, loose fasteners, and areas that repeatedly hold debris. Compare these findings with winter wash records. A recurring trouble spot may call for a better wash angle, a changed inspection step, coating service, or OEM-directed repair.

Keep records the shop can use

A short record is better than an undocumented wash. For each unit, capture the date, odometer or hours, recent exposure, wash location, areas cleaned, containment method, wastewater destination, inspection findings, and the employee or vendor completing the work. Attach photos when a defect needs monitoring or repair.

Review the records after major storms and during the spring reset. They help maintenance staff connect exposure with condition, confirm that flagged items were addressed, and adjust wash priority for the next winter.
